San Mateo Ixtatán (luto)

VERY HARD TO FIND in blue and purple color! Beautiful vintage huipil from San Mateo Ixtatán in the northern region of Huehuetenango in Guatemala. These are more difficult to find! Very large lovely hand woven huipil, accented with circles and sunbursts throughout. This amazing huipil measures 29 1/2″ across the shoulders, and 34 1/2″ from the neckline to the bottom edges (folded). The neck opening is round and measures 7″ in diameter. The sides are stitched closed to create the arm holes, but can easily be unstitched if desired.

This huipil is a huipil de luto (mourning) generally worn after the death of a spouse or loved one; thus the extensive use of purple. It is a beautiful example of luto huipil that is not often seen for sale.

This huipil is very beautiful with a hand woven pattern throughout the bodice. It includes the classic patterns of sunbursts but in shades of blues and purples. The woven background is simple double-layer white cotton muslin trimmed along the bottom with a delicate row of purple. This is a rare chance to have such a beautiful huipil.

This huipil is in very good used condition for its age, with minimal sign of wear. There are a few loose threads, but the style of embroidery lends itself to have what appears to be loose threads, but actually are the ends of the embroidery floss that have come ‘untucked’. There is some slight discoloration in the muslin fabric at the very bottom, but it blends with the normal variation in the natural colored fabric.

Tactic

Super lightweight huipil from the Tactic region. This beautiful huipil measures 36″ across the shoulders, and 19″ from the neckline to the bottom edges (folded). The neck opening is round and measures 8 1/2″ in diameter.

This huipil is different with a very open style weaving that results in a guaze-like texture with hand weaving that features rows of ‘mayan stars’. The accent colors are green, purple and  blue. The background is an open-woven fabric in white cotton. Frequently this style of huipil (also like the huipiles from Coban) are worn untucked from the corte (skirt).
