Nahualá

Stunning white on white design vintage huipil from the Nahualá region of Guatemala. This elegant huipil measures 31″ across the shoulders, 24″ from the neckline to the bottom edges (folded), and the collar is an opening between the panels in the front and measures 10″ in length. This huipil is lightweight, woven on a white cotton background. On one side at the lower edge is an open part of the weaving, resulting in a tassel style look.

This huipil is in very good used condition with perhaps a few loose threads.

Nahualá

Stunning white on white design huipil from the Nahualá region of Guatemala. This elegant three panel huipil measures 31″ across the shoulders, 21″ from the neckline to the bottom edges (folded), and the collar is round and measures 6″ in diameter. The sides have had the stitching removed, so this huipil opens completely. The sides can easily be stitched closed to create arm holes for wearing.

This huipil is a delicate white woven design with colorful accents in red, blue, green and yellow. The lions at the shoulders and on the bodice are woven is a silver thread, creating a lovely shadow effect. It is very difficult to photograph this huipil to show the delicate white on white weaving. This huipil is light/medium weight, woven on a white cotton background. The collar is trimmed in the ‘radiating sun’ style of the huipiles of the region, particularly those of Chichicastenango. .On the lower edge are loose threads, creating an slightly unraveled effect.

*A technique unique to the region of Nahualá is to intentionally let the color of the threads run onto the base fabric. It is said that this dates back to the use of expensive silk threads on the huipiles, which would lose some of the color and run, causing this stunning effect. This is a very striking piece extremely representative of this region. This particular huipil has a minor amount of this ‘bleed’ effect surrounding the lions, perhaps from the silver thread or the blue accent thread. It is very faint, but still slightly visible.

This huipil is used and in excellent used condition with perhaps a few loose threads.

San Antonio Aguas Calientes

Sweet young girl’s vintage huipil fom the San Antonio Aguas Calientes area of Guatemala. This small huipil measures 23″ across the shoulders, and 17 1/2″ from the neckline to the bottom edges (folded). The neck opening is diamond shaped, and measures 4 1/2” on each of the four sides, with an addition 1″ slit in both the front and back seam to allow more headroom.

This intricately woven huipil has the traditional rows of zigzag mountains and triangular patterns of the rivers. The bird and flower design at the shoulders as well as the center panel on both sides are done in the very fine and detailed San Antonio weaving style where the pattern is identical both inside and out. The weaving is incredibly fine, causing this vintage huipil to be wonderfully soft to the touch. This little girl’s huipil was more than likely handed down to all the young girls in a family.

The colors are a full spectrum of green, blue, orange, red, yellow and much more. The design is woven on a red woven cotton base.

This huipil is in good used condition. Due to the age of this huipil, it shows some minor signs of wear such as color variations due to fading, a few loose theads, and a few tiny holes in the lower red section caused when the the seam to narrow the shoulders was removed.

This huipil is different with a very open style weaving that results in a guaze-like texture with hand weaving that features rows of ‘mayan stars’. The accent colors are green, purple and  blue.
