Chichicastenango

Amazing corte or skirt from the Chichicastenango. This is a woven corte, or mayan skirt is a wrap-around skirt that consists of a cut of cloth joined to form a tube into which the woman steps. Excess material is wrapped around the body and folded at the waist in pleats, and tied with a faja (belt). This elegant corte measures 40″ wide and 52″ long (doubled). This corte has the opening at the long sides as shown in the picture of the corte hanging. If the stitching joining the sides of the tube were removed, this fabric would measure approximately 40″ by 104″ laid out flat.

This incredible corte has ikat woven stripes throughout that are highlighted by purple and pink metallic thread stripes. There is very lovely hand embroidery where the seams are joined. The embroidery features various shades of purples. The corte is woven in a rich navy blue cotton. There is use of metallic thread throughout the textile.

Woven corte, or mayan skirt, in a rich cranberry red color with lovely ikat design! The corte is a wrap-around skirt that consists of a cut of cloth usually joined to form a tube into which the woman steps. Excess material is wrapped around the body, folded at the waist in pleats, and tied with a faja (belt).

This lovely corte measures 34″ wide and 72″ long (laid flat). Cortes are generally sewn together to make a tube for wearing. This corte has the opening at the long sides as shown in the picture of the corte hanging. If the stitching joining the sides of the tube were removed, this fabric would measure approximately 34″ by 144″ laid out flat, 4 yards of fabric! Note that the corte has been extended by adding an extra strip along the end. Some taller women prefer a longer skirt than the looms provide. This is common.

This corte is beautiful with its ikat design throughout. There are hidden figures of corn plants, little people, and birds woven into the ikat design. This medium weight corte is woven on a foot loom of soft cotton.

This corte measures 41″ wide and 92″ long (laid flat). Cortes are generally sewn together to make a tube for wearing. This one has has been cut along the short side so it is one long piece of fabric. This corte is very simple with its white stripes on a black background. This corte is made from cotton/acrylic blend threads has the feel of the acrylic threads. There is a decorative randa both horizontally and vertically done is a vibrant rainbow of colors.

Striking corte/skirt made in the town of Santa Maria de Jesús. The corte is a wrap-around skirt that consists of a cut of cloth usually joined to form a tube into which the woman steps. Excess material is wrapped around the body and folded at the waist in pleats, and tied with a faja (belt).

This corte measures 43″ wide and 50″ long (doubled). This corte has the opening at the sides as shown in the picture of the corte hanging. If the stitching joining the sides of the tube were removed, this fabric would measure approximately 43″ by 100″ laid out flat.

This corte is beautiful with its classic crisp indigo-blue design with white stripes. The accent stitching at the randa, or where the panels join, is hand-guided machine embroidered accents. The fabric is of a medium weight.

Wonderfully large and soft corte from the region of Chajul in Ixil Triangle in Guatemala. The corte is a wrap-around skirt that consists of a cut of cloth joined to form a tube into which the woman steps. Excess material is wrapped around the body and folded at the waist in pleats, and tied with a faja (belt).

This corte measures 35″ wide and 68″ long (doubled). This corte has the opening at the sides as shown in the picture of the corte hanging. If the stitching joining the sides of the tube were removed, this fabric would measure approximately 35″ by 136″ laid out flat. There is an additional row of stitching on this corte that divides the tube into two sections. One is folded inside the other to create a ‘lining’ to the skirt. Note that the corte has been extended by adding an extra strip along the end. Some taller women prefer a longer skirt than the looms provide. This is very common.

This is a wonderful and striking corte. This corte is absolutely beautiful with its deep cranberry color and woven accent stripes. The fabric has almost a brushed feel to it. This light to medium weight corte is super soft to the touch and drapes beautifully!
