Large and beautiful woven corte, or mayan skirt, accented ikat design with beautiful colors, from the town of Joyabaj. The corte is a wrap-around skirt that consists of a cut of cloth usually joined to form a tube into which the woman steps. Excess material is wrapped around the body and folded at the waist in pleats, and tied with a faja (belt).

This fairly large corte measures 30″ wide and 59 1/2″ long (doubled). Cortes are sewn together to make a tube. This corte has the opening at the long sides as shown in the picture of the corte hanging. If the stitching joining the sides of the tube were removed, this fabric would measure approximately 30″ by 119″ laid out flat.

This corte is beautiful with its accented ikat design that is accented with colors of purple, green, yellow, and orange with many other colored accent stripes including a very faint silver metallic thread. This heavy fabric is slightly worn which gives it a softer feel. Fabric from cortes can be used in a variety of ways, such as table covers, bed covers, curtains, throw pillows, etc.

This corte is in very good used condition, with very little sign of wear. Perhaps a few loose threads.

Zunil

Lovely! Hand embroidered woven corte, or mayan skirt, full of mayan figures. It is from the town of Zuníl. The corte is a wrap-around skirt that consists of a cut of cloth joined to form a tube into which the woman steps. Excess material is wrapped around the body and folded at the waist in pleats, and tied with a faja (belt).

This wonderful and striking corte measures 90″ long (from top to bottom as shown in photo) and 45″ wide from side to side. Cortes are sewn together to make a tube. This corte has had the stitching removed, so that it is a full flat piece of fabric. This corte is fairly thick and heavy.

This corte is absolutely beautiful with designs that feature rows of brightly colored mayan stars and quetzal birds radiating from the center. The colors are greens, pinks, blues, purples, oranges, yellows and more! The vertical pink stripes are accented with a gold thread running alongside the colors. The background is black cotton woven fabric. The randa, or area joining the fabric is accented with blue machine embroidered stitching. It has the special added accent of a machine embroidered quetzal bird in the center near the randa.

This corte is beautiful with its soft grey ikat design that is accented with stripes of pink and green. It has an accent row of flowers in yellow, pink and green with grapes in the middle that runs the length of the corte. These flowers a hand guided, machine embroidered.

This corte is beautiful with its accented design that is common for the Santa Maria de Jesús region. It has a seam, or randa, of flowers in yellow and green that runs the length of the corte and one that runs the width.

This corte has had the stitching joining the sides of the tube removed, and measures approximately 45″ by 87″ laid out flat. The center embroidery runs the full length of the 87″. This corte is fairly thick and heavy.  The background is black cotton woven fabric. The embroidered roses are machine done free-hand, and are truly an art form. Just amazing!

Where the corte used to be joined to create the tube skirt is another randa that has been cut to open up the skirt.

This elegant corte measures 43″ wide and 81″ long (laid flat). Cortes are generally sewn together to make a tube, but this one is not. It is a full flat piece of fabric.

This corte is beautiful with its accented design that is machine embroidered free-hand. The design runs the entire length on the 81” skirt. It is a series of light blue baskets overflowing with colorful flowers. Each flower basket is topped by a pair of hummingbirds and lightly accented by very thin gold thread. The hummingbird pair on each basket varies in color from basket to basket. They are absolutely beautiful! The corte has a seam, or randa, that runs the length of the fabric.

There is an extra matching piece of fabric added at the bottom of the corte (on the width to make it 40″wide) to make it longer for taller women.
