Nahualá

Stunning white on white design huipil from the Nahualá region of Guatemala. This elegant three panel huipil measures 31″ across the shoulders, 21″ from the neckline to the bottom edges (folded), and the collar is round and measures 6″ in diameter. The sides have had the stitching removed, so this huipil opens completely. The sides can easily be stitched closed to create arm holes for wearing.

This huipil is a delicate white woven design with colorful accents in red, blue, green and yellow. The lions at the shoulders and on the bodice are woven is a silver thread, creating a lovely shadow effect. It is very difficult to photograph this huipil to show the delicate white on white weaving. This huipil is light/medium weight, woven on a white cotton background. The collar is trimmed in the ‘radiating sun’ style of the huipiles of the region, particularly those of Chichicastenango. .On the lower edge are loose threads, creating an slightly unraveled effect.

*A technique unique to the region of Nahualá is to intentionally let the color of the threads run onto the base fabric. It is said that this dates back to the use of expensive silk threads on the huipiles, which would lose some of the color and run, causing this stunning effect. This is a very striking piece extremely representative of this region. This particular huipil has a minor amount of this ‘bleed’ effect surrounding the lions, perhaps from the silver thread or the blue accent thread. It is very faint, but still slightly visible.

This huipil is used and in excellent used condition with perhaps a few loose threads.

The woven background is simple white cotton muslin.
