896-nahuala-4914Nahualá

Wonderfully detailed older huipil from the Nahualá region of Guatemala. This stunning huipil measures 31″ across the shoulders, 23″ – 24 1/2″ from the neckline to the bottom edges (folded). The panels are not even.  The head opening measures a generous 7 1/2″ by 7 1/2″. The sides have had the stitching removed, so this huipil opens completely. The sides can easily be stitched closed to create arm holes for wearing.

This all cotton, older huipil is striking with its detailed woven design in red with accents in a variety of colors. The pattern is a geomorphic design resembling baskets with birds and corn plants as accents across the bodice both front and back. There is bleeding of the color throughout onto the light background cotton fabric, which is a desirable trait in the huipiles of this region. The technique is to intentionally let the color of the threads run onto the base fabric. It is said that this dates back to the use of expensive silk threads on the huipiles, which would lose some of the color and run, causing this stunning effect.

Additional photos can be found here.

This beautiful older huipil is in good used vintage condition with perhaps a few loose threads.  There are some faint stains and running of the color throughout. This is a fantastic textile perfect for wear or for display!
