San Mateo Ixtatán (luto)
VERY HARD TO FIND in blue and purple color! Beautiful vintage huipil from San Mateo Ixtatán in the northern region of Huehuetenango in Guatemala. These are more difficult to find! This huipil is in very good used condition for its age, with minimal sign of wear. There are a few loose threads, but the style of embroidery lends itself to have what appears to be loose threads, but actually are the ends of the embroidery floss that have come ‘untucked’. San Mateo Ixtatán
Striking design from the very remote town of San Mateo Ixtatán in the Guatemalan department of Huehuetenango. This tzute is actually a huipil that has not been finished. Quetzaltenango
Beautiful huipil from the Quetzaltenango/Xela region in Guatemala. This huipil measures 27 1/2″ across the shoulders, and 27″ from the neckline to the bottom edges (folded). The neck opening is round and measures 6” in diameter.
This huipil is a huipil de luto (mourning) generally worn after the death of a spouse or loved one; thus the extensive use of purple. It is a beautiful example of luto huipil that is not often seen for sale.
The colors are a sea of purple, black, and yellow/gold, with purple pansies cascading down the front and back and adorning the neckline. Joining the pansies around the collar are a sweet pair of hummingbirds on one side and a solitary hummingbird on the other. There are gathers on each side, giving it a slightly ruffled look, and the sides are closed, creating sleeve holes.
This huipil is in very good used condition. There is some slight wear in the form of a couple of loose threads and a slight amount of discoloration in the lower white section where the purple has faded into the white cotton. There is a very tiny hole on the lower white part where one of the gathers was pulled. It is perhaps 1mm in diameter; very difficult to notice.
