San Mateo Ixtatán

San Mateo Ixtatán

Striking design from the very remote town of San Mateo Ixtatán in the Guatemalan department of Huehuetenango. This tzute is actually a huipil that has not been finished. New huipiles are generally purchased by their owners unfinished. They then decide what style and decoration they want for the collars and sleeves. This beautiful ‘unfinished’ huipil has many uses, from carrying items to wearing folded on the head. This tzute measures 36″ wide and 54″ long.

This tzute is lovely with its hand-embroidered design in brilliant colors of red, yellow, purple, and blue sewn on a simple muslin cotton background. The design has the round ‘suns’ radiating from the center as the traditional design from San Mateo Ixtatán.

This tzute is in very good used condition, with a few minor signs of wear. There is a slight discoloration in a few small areas of the lower edge of the muslin and a couple of marks left from where the artist outlined their woven design.

Tactic

Super lightweight huipil from the Tactic region. This beautiful huipil measures 30″ across the shoulders, and 24″ from the neckline to the bottom edges (folded). The neck opening is round and measures 7″ in diameter.

This huipil is different with a very open style weaving that results in a guaze-like texture with brilliant hand weaving with satin soft thread that features rows of ‘mayan stars’. The accent colors are glowing jewel and pastel colors of greens, pinks, blues, purples, yellows and more! The background, open-woven fabric is a deep brick-red cotton. There is an added piece of fabric around the bottom to extend the length of this huipil. Frequently this style of huipil (also like the huipiles from Coban) are worn untucked from the corte (skirt). This extra fabric was added so that the wearer can tuck the huipil into their skirt. It would be easy to carefully remove this extra fabric if one wishes.

This huipil is in very good used condition, the only flaws being the occasional pulled or loose thread. This is expected due to the delicate style of this weaving.
