418 Sombrero celeste San Juan Atitan-0613San Juan Atitán

Spectacular sombrero from the town of San Juan Atitán. The men in this town proudly wear this heavier weight straw hat with their traditional clothing. San Juan Atitán is one of the few regions left in Guatemala where the men continue to wear their traditional Maya clothing instead of opting for the less expensive ‘western’ clothing. This sombrero measures 19 1/2″ around the inside of the hat (head size), is 3″ tall, with a brim of 2 1/4″ all the way around. The four ribbons that wrap around the hat extend beyond the hat by 3″ to 7″.

This wonderful sombrero is made from braided straw that appears to be hand stitched with accents of black straw braided into the top and the brim, as well as under the brim. The brim has an extra, second, layer of straw stitched on to create a stiffer brim to give it extra support. The accent ribbons include a wide ribbon of black velveteen, a thin ribbon of raspberry satin, a blue with gold chain accent ribbon, and a row of twisted teal yarn.

Please note that this item can be combined with the camisa, tzute, faja, and capixaij (capishay) from San Juan Atitán that we have for sale to have a man’s outfit from the pueblo, just add white cotton pants and it is complete! Great photo of how they are generally worn here.
