535 San Mateo Ixtatan-0284San Mateo Ixtatán*

Beautiful vintage huipil from San Mateo Ixtatán in the northern region of Huehuetenango in Guatemala. These are more difficult to find! Very large lovely hand woven huipil, accented with circles and sunbursts throughout. This amazing huipil measures 32″ across the shoulders, and 46″ from the neckline to the bottom edges (folded). The neck opening is round and measures 7 1/2″ in diameter. The sides are stitched closed to create the arm holes, but can easily be unstitched if desired.

This huipil is very beautiful with a hand embroidered pattern throughout the bodice. It includes the classic patterns of sunbursts but in shades of reds, yellows, and purples. The background is simple white cotton muslin. *The original huipil was altered and stitched onto a larger muslin background, creating a longer, dress-like garment.

This huipil is in great used condition for its age, with minimal sign of wear. There are a few loose threads, but the style of embroidery lends itself to have what appears to be loose threads, but actually are the ends of the embroidery floss that have come ‘untucked’. A stunning textile!

475 Corte San Mateo Ixtatan-0010San Mateo Ixtatán

Very hard to find long corte from San Mateo Ixtatán in the northern region of Huehuetenango in Guatemala. The corte is a wrap-around skirt that consists of a cut of cloth joined to form a tube into which the woman steps. Excess material is wrapped around the body and folded at the waist in pleats, and tied with a faja (belt). This corte measures 37 1/2″ wide and 72″ long (doubled). This corte has the opening at the long sides as shown in the picture of the corte hanging. If the stitching joining the sides of the tube were removed, this fabric would measure approximately 37″ by 144″ laid out flat.

This is a wonderful and striking corte. This corte is absolutely beautiful with its deep red color and woven ikat design throughout. It is woven in an elegant pattern with accents of white, orange and green stripes. The background is red cotton woven fabric. This corte fabric has a crisp feel to it that would be wonderful for use as home decor fabric in addition to being worn.

Additional photos can be found here.

Fabric from cortes can be used in a variety of ways, such as table covers, bed covers, curtains, throw pillows, clothing, etc. due to the heavier and more durable nature of the weaving.

This corte is in excellent used condition, with perhaps a few loose threads.

San Mateo Ixtatán

Very hard to find vintage huipil from San Mateo Ixtatán in the northern region of Huehuetenango in Guatemala. These are becoming very difficult to find!  Large daily use hand woven huipil in bright colors. This huipil measures 32″ across the shoulders, and 30 1/2″ from the neckline to the bottom edges (folded). The neck opening is slightly rectangular and measures 9″ x 10″.

This huipil is very beautiful with a hand woven pattern throughout the blouse. It is designed with the classic sunburst as the entire huipil in red, orange, and yellow with accents of green. This huipil from the northern part of Guatemala shows some similarity with the colors seen in Mexican huipiles, but because of the remote location of San Mateo Ixtatán, it truly has a style and design of its own. The woven background is simple white cotton muslin.

This vintage huipil is in fairly good used condition, with some signs of wear. There are a few loose threads, but the style of embroidery lends itself to have what appears to be loose threads, but actually are the ends of the embroidery floss that have come ‘untucked’. There are some slightly dingy parts of the muslin fabric on the underneath, as well as normal signs of use.

San Mateo Ixtatán (luto)

VERY HARD TO FIND in blue and purple color! Beautiful vintage huipil from San Mateo Ixtatán in the northern region of Huehuetenango in Guatemala. These are more difficult to find! Very large lovely hand woven huipil, accented with circles and sunbursts throughout. This amazing huipil measures 29 1/2″ across the shoulders, and 34 1/2″ from the neckline to the bottom edges (folded). The neck opening is round and measures 7″ in diameter. The sides are stitched closed to create the arm holes, but can easily be unstitched if desired.

This huipil is a huipil de luto (mourning) generally worn after the death of a spouse or loved one; thus the extensive use of purple. It is a beautiful example of luto huipil that is not often seen for sale.

This huipil is very beautiful with a hand woven pattern throughout the bodice. It includes the classic patterns of sunbursts but in shades of blues and purples. The woven background is simple double-layer white cotton muslin trimmed along the bottom with a delicate row of purple. This is a rare chance to have such a beautiful huipil.

This huipil is in very good used condition for its age, with minimal sign of wear. There are a few loose threads, but the style of embroidery lends itself to have what appears to be loose threads, but actually are the ends of the embroidery floss that have come ‘untucked’. There is some slight discoloration in the muslin fabric at the very bottom, but it blends with the normal variation in the natural colored fabric.
