From the Santa Cruz la Laguna region of Guatemala, near Lake Atitlán. This large huipil measures 30″ across the shoulders, and 33″ from the neckline to the bottom edges (folded). The neck opening is round and measures 5″ in diameter with a long 9″ opening in the front center where the panels meet. There is a small string tie closure at the collar. The sides have been stitched closed to make arm holes.
This huipil is unique in that it is one of very few that has the predominant design on the back with minimal decoration on the front. It is very lovely with elaborate hand embroidery that features a zigzag pattern using colors inspired from the lake waters. The collar is embroidered in a similar design. The colors are a variety of deep aqua blues and greens ranging from turquoise to deep olive green with an occasional hint of yellow and lilac on a striped cotton background. The background fabric is deep red with very faint stripes of grey.
This huipil is in excellent used condition, with almost no sign of wear.
