695 Corte Chichicastenango-0559Chichicastenango

Amazing corte or skirt from the Chichicastenango. This is a woven corte, or mayan skirt is a wrap-around skirt that consists of a cut of cloth joined to form a tube into which the woman steps. Excess material is wrapped around the body and folded at the waist in pleats, and tied with a faja (belt). This elegant corte measures 26 1/2″ wide and 48″ long (doubled). This corte has the opening at the long sides as shown in the picture of the corte hanging. If the stitching joining the sides of the tube were removed, this fabric would measure approximately 26 1/2″ by 96″ laid out flat.

This incredible corte has elaborately detailed ikat woven stripes throughout that are done in colorful patterns with a cotton blend thread. Look closely! There is very lovely hand embroidery where the seams are joined. The embroidery features wonderful colors and designs. The corte has fantastic shades of purple, pink, salmon, and taupe. There is a hint of metallic thread throughout the textile.

Additional photos can be found here.

Fabric from cortes can be used in a variety of ways besides just for wearing, such as table covers, bed covers, curtains, throw pillows, clothing, etc. due to the heavier and more durable nature of the weaving.

This corte is in very good used condition, with little sign of wear, perhaps a few loose threads and a couple of slightly worn areas.  A spectacular work of art!

San Raimundo 391-0850San Raimundo

Very unique and hard to find vintage huipil in excellent condition! This huipil is from the area of San Raimundo. This is a very unique vintage style huipil full of color.  This lovely huipil measures 34” across the shoulders, and 24 1/2″ from the neckline to the bottom edges (folded). The neck opening is rectangular and measures 4 1/2” x 5 3/4″. The sides are not stitched closed, so this huipil can be opened fully for display or easily stitched closed for wear.

This huipil is beautiful with its deep rainbow of colors on a deep burgundy red cotton background. Generally, huipiles of this area are woven on a multicolor background with much use of yellows. This vintage hupil is unique due to its restricted color palate. The design features the traditional animal motifs found in the huipiles of this region, including birds, cats and deer throughout the bodice. The figures are much more noticeable than the tradition style huipiles of the area due to the solid color background. There is much use of wool thread in this huipil. The background is medium to heavy weight cotton. The collar is trimmed in black velvet with a gold cord accent.

Additional photos can be found here.

This huipil is in excellent used condition, with very little sign of wear. There are perhaps a few loose threads. There are faint creases in the fabric where the huipil was gathered and sewn to make it smaller, but has since been opened to its full size. These are easily ironed out. Beautiful and unique vintage work of art!
