554 Rebozo Nahuala-1379Nahualá

Stunning pink-design huipil turned decorative textile from the Nahualá region of Guatemala. This elegant runner-style textile measures 18″ in width and 78″ in length, not including the additional 6″ fringe on each end.

The huipil used in this creation is a rich pink woven design with accents in black, blue, green, pink and red. There is a bleed of the pink color onto the originally white background fabric, which is a desirable trait in the huipiles of this region. The technique is to intentionally let the color of the threads run onto the base fabric. It is said that this dates back to the use of expensive silk threads on the huipiles, which would lose some of the color and run, causing this stunning effect.

The huipil was originally a simple two-panel design that was at some point deconstructed and then the two long panels were resewn end to end, creating this long and lovely textile. Fringe and whimsical designs including Mayan numbers were added to the open areas to create a one-of-a-kind piece of art.

Additional photos can be found here.

This textile is in very good used condition. This piece would be a stunning table runner, wall hanging or accent on the foot of the bed! A truly beautiful work of art!
