837 Corte Chajul-3101Chajul

Wonderfully large and soft corte from the region of Chajul in Ixil Triangle in Guatemala. The corte is a wrap-around skirt that consists of a cut of cloth joined to form a tube into which the woman steps. Excess material is wrapped around the body and folded at the waist in pleats, and tied with a faja (belt).

This corte measures 36″ wide and 66″ long (doubled). This corte has the opening at the sides as shown in the picture of the corte hanging. If the stitching joining the sides of the tube were removed, this fabric would measure approximately 36″ by 132″ laid out flat. Note that the corte has been extended by adding an extra strip along the end. Some taller women prefer a longer skirt than the looms provide. This is common.

This is a wonderful and striking corte. This corte is absolutely beautiful with its deep red color and woven accent stripes. The fabric has almost a brushed feel to it.  This light to medium weight corte is super soft to the touch and drapes beautifully!

Additional photos can be found here.

Fabric from cortes can be used in a variety of ways besides skirts, such as table covers, bed covers, curtains, throw pillows, clothing, etc. due to the heavier and more durable nature of the weaving.

This corte is in good used condition, with perhaps a few loose threads and and a few small worn areas/tiny holes. A very lovely textile!

San Raimundo 391-0850San Raimundo

Very unique and hard to find vintage huipil in excellent condition! This huipil is from the area of San Raimundo. This is a very unique vintage style huipil full of color.  This lovely huipil measures 34” across the shoulders, and 24 1/2″ from the neckline to the bottom edges (folded). The neck opening is rectangular and measures 4 1/2” x 5 3/4″. The sides are not stitched closed, so this huipil can be opened fully for display or easily stitched closed for wear.

This huipil is beautiful with its deep rainbow of colors on a deep burgundy red cotton background. Generally, huipiles of this area are woven on a multicolor background with much use of yellows. This vintage hupil is unique due to its restricted color palate. The design features the traditional animal motifs found in the huipiles of this region, including birds, cats and deer throughout the bodice. The figures are much more noticeable than the tradition style huipiles of the area due to the solid color background. There is much use of wool thread in this huipil. The background is medium to heavy weight cotton. The collar is trimmed in black velvet with a gold cord accent.

Additional photos can be found here.

This huipil is in excellent used condition, with very little sign of wear. There are perhaps a few loose threads. There are faint creases in the fabric where the huipil was gathered and sewn to make it smaller, but has since been opened to its full size. These are easily ironed out. Beautiful and unique vintage work of art!

San Juan la Laguna

Striking huipil from San Juan la Laguna. The collar is accented with the classic ‘sun’ design circling the neck opening that is most often seen in huipiles from Chichicastenango. This two lienzo huipil measures 34″ across the shoulders, and 17 1/2″ from the neckline to the bottom edges (folded). The neck opening is round and measures approximately 5 1/2″ in diameter (small). The background fabric is a super soft deep burgundy-red woven cotton.

The accent around the collar is also red with a light cream color trim. This is also the same color scheme used down the center on both sides to join the panels. The background fabric is woven super fine and is buttery soft to the touch.
