696 Corte Nahuala-0521Nahualá

Stunning hand embroidered and woven corte, or mayan skirt,  from the Nahualá region of Guatemala. The corte is a wrap-around skirt that consists of a cut of cloth joined to form a tube into which the woman steps. Excess material is wrapped around the body and folded at the waist in pleats, and tied with a faja (belt).

This is a wonderful corte. This corte is elegant with simple decorations that feature colorful mayan designs of corn plants done in ikat stripes. It is woven in accent colors of very soft hues of purple and greens as well as other colors. The background is an indigo blue cotton woven fabric. The randa, or area joining the fabric, is hand embroidery in beautiful colors that run the entire length of the corte. This corte fabric has a crisp feel to it that would be wonderful for use as home decor fabric in addition to being worn.

Additional photos can be found here.

Fabric from cortes can be used in a variety of ways, such as table covers, bed covers, curtains, throw pillows, clothing, etc. due to the heavier and more durable nature of the weaving.

This corte is in very excellent used condition, with a few loose threads.
