862 Corte-2872Santa Maria de Jesús

Striking corte/skirt made in the town of Santa Maria de Jesús. The corte is a wrap-around skirt that consists of a cut of cloth usually joined to form a tube into which the woman steps. Excess material is wrapped around the body and folded at the waist in pleats, and tied with a faja (belt).

This corte measures 43″ wide and 50″ long (doubled). This corte has the opening at the sides as shown in the picture of the corte hanging. If the stitching joining the sides of the tube were removed, this fabric would measure approximately 43″ by 100″ laid out flat.

This corte is beautiful with its classic crisp indigo-blue design with white stripes. The accent stitching at the randa, or where the panels join, is hand-guided machine embroidered accents. The fabric is of a medium weight.

Additional photos can be found here.

This corte is in fair used condition, with a few small areas of wear. There are several areas with light spots where it appears that bleach splashed onto the corte along the edge (please see additional photos). Still a very lovely textile!
