686 Almolonga-0621Almolonga

Very heavy and very large vintage huipil with early weaving and design! It is from Almolonga in the Quetzaltenango region of Guatemala. This expansive huipil measures 30″ across the shoulders, and 36″ from the neckline to the bottom edges (folded). The neck opening is round and measures 4″ in diameter with an additional 3″ tie-closed slit along one to ease pulling over the head (note: this is a very small opening and will not fit over average adult head without alteration). The sides have been sewn to create armholes.

This vintage huipil is unique with early woven design of the Almolonga region that features geomorphic designs of cats, dogs, corn plants, and zigzag rivers in a beautiful colors throughout the bodice on both sides. These designs are not often seen anymore. The background fabric is a heavy, deep red woven cotton. The collar is accented in a lovely machine embroidered flower circle and trimmed in a royal blue velveteen. The sleeves are trimmed in the same blue accent.

Additional photos can be found here.

This huipil is in great used condition, with few signs of wear. There is some slight wear on the randa stitching with a small section on the front that is not stitched closed. This wonderfully larger huipil would be a stunning wall hanging or great for wear! Please bear in mind the heavy weight of this huipil will affect the shipping cost.
