709 Almolonga-0927Almolonga

Very heavy and very large huipil with beautiful weaving and design! It is from Almolonga in the Quetzaltenango region of Guatemala. This expansive huipil measures 29″ across the shoulders, and 30″ – 36″ from the neckline to the bottom edges (folded). The panels are not all the same length. The neck opening is square and measures 4 3/4″ along each of the found sides with an additional 2 1/2″ tie-closed slit along one side to ease pulling over the head. The sides have been sewn to create armholes.

This huipil is striking with the classic woven design of the Almolonga region but in an exquisite deep red color. The background fabric is a heavy, deep red woven cotton. The collar is accented in a lovely hand-guided, machine embroidered poinsettia flower accent with tiny glass beading at the center of each flower. The collar and sleeves are trimmed in a black velveteen.

Additional photos can be found here.

This huipil is in very good used condition, with few signs of wear, perhaps a few loose threads. There is some slight wear on the randa stitching and a section near the bottom where the stitching between the panels has come open. This wonderfully larger huipil would be a stunning wall hanging or great for wear!
