Tactic 400-0966Coban

Incredible vintage huipil, full of detailed figures! This huipil is from the town of Coban in the region of Alta Verapaz. This lovely huipil measures 39” across the shoulders, 36″ across the chest, and 17″ from the neckline to the bottom edges (folded). The neck opening is rectangular and measures 4 1/2” x 6 1/2”. The sides are stitched to create armholes.

This antique huipil is elegant with its very detailed weaving in pure cotton throughout the garment. This older style huipil has tiny figures of mayan men standing in the milpa (corn field) surrounded by corn plants and birds accented with rows mayan stars. This huipil has a rainbow of colors, although slightly muted due to the age of this textile. The quality of the weaving of this garment is very fine and very detailed; another sign of its age. The background fabric is a medium weight woven black cotton.

This huipil is in very good used condition, with a little sign of wear in the form of a couple of loose threads, and some very subtle fading of the color, particularly in the black background fabric. There are faint creases in the fabric where the huipil was gathered and sewn to make it smaller, but has since been opened to its full size. These are easily ironed out. The colors in these sections are slightly brighter than the rest of the huipil. This is a great opportunity to have a beautiful antique textile.
