547 Colotenango-1363Colotenango

Exquisite woven huipil from the area of Colotenango in the department of Huehuetenango. This striking huipil measures 29″ across the shoulders, and 19 1/2″ from the neckline to the bottom edges (folded) not including the fringe along the lower edge. With the fringe, it measures 23″. The neck opening is roundish/square and measures 5″ along each of the four sides. The sides are stitched, creating armholes.

This three panel huipil is very beautiful and wonderfully soft, with a hand woven pattern throughout. It is decorated with classic designs of Colotenango with Mayan stars. The colors are a very deep brown color with pastel accents on a striped background. The neckline and sleeves are accented in a simple striped stitching.  The lower edge has been carefully knotted to create an elegant tassle trim. Huipiles from Colotenango are known for their extreme softness due to the use of ‘hilo aleman’ or German thread that is much finer and more expensive than traditional threads.

This huipil is in great used condition, perhaps a few loose threads. Perfect for display or for wear!
