439 Joyabaj-0233Joyabaj

Unique blouse style huipil from the town of Joyabaj. This smaller modern huipil had previously had the sides taken in so that it more resembled a blouse. The stitching was removed and it now lays out flat. This huipil measures 32″ from sleeve tip to sleeve tip and 19″ from the shoulder to the bottom edge. The neck opening is round and measures 6″ in diameter.

This modern style huipil is machine embroidered with the traditional Joyabaj circular design that radiates from the collar in a spectrum of colors. The round circles are accented with a tiny amount of silver thread. The caps on the sleeves have the same circular decoration. There is a lovely pair of quetzales on each shoulder and a darling bird amongst flowers in the middle of the huipil on each side. The background fabric is a brown woven cotton blend with tiny stripes of burgundy and green.

Additional photos can be found here.

This huipil is in good used condition. Perhaps a few loose threads and some fading of the bodice (this fading is not nearly as dramatic as seen in the photos).
