594 Nahuala-0164Nahualá

Smaller purple design huipil from the Nahualá region of Guatemala. This sweet little huipil measures 24″ across the shoulders, 23″ from the neckline to the bottom edges (folded), and the collar is square and measures 4 1/2″ by 4 1/2″ (very small). The sides have been stitched, creating arm holes for wearing.

This huipil is a rich purple woven design with accents in black, gold, purple, and red. There is a purple hue to the background design. The design is mostly cotton/acrylic threads. There is some bleed of the purple color onto the light background fabric, which is a desirable trait in the huipiles of this region. The technique is to intentionally let the color of the threads run onto the base fabric. It is said that this dates back to the use of expensive silk threads on the huipiles, which would lose some of the color and run, causing this stunning effect. The pattern primarily geomorphic designs of zigzag rivers and Mayan stars across the shoulders and the chest. This huipil is light/medium weight, woven on a white cotton background. This is a very striking piece extremely representative of this region.
