639 Nebaj-0574Nebaj

Very detailed woven and embroidered vintage huipil from the village of Nebaj. This spectacular huipil measures 34″ across the shoulders, and 22″ from the neckline to the bottom edges (folded). The neck opening is diamond shaped and measures approximately 4 1/2″ along each of the four sides (comfortable fit over avg adult head). The sides have been stitched to create arm holes.

This huipil features extensive and elaborate hand embroidery of large birds strolling through grass and flowers that is representative for the area of Nebaj. This older style huipil is not often seen as all the detail in the hand embroidery is very labor intensive. The neckline and upper part of the randa are decorated with colorful hand embroidered water jugs. The neckline and sleeve opening are trimmed in cranberry colored crochet accents. The very soft and drapey background fabric is the traditional color scheme of the Nebaj region with stripes of green, purple, blue, and yellow. The hand embroidery design is very complimentary to the rebozo/perraje from Nebaj shown on this page.

This vintage huipil is in excellent used condition with very little sign of wear, perhaps a few loose threads. A spectacular and very elegant piece, perfect for display or wear!
