Panajachel

Young girl’s huipil from the town of Panajachel on the shores of Lake Atitlán in the region of Sololá in Guatemala. This darling huipil measures 16 1/2″ across the shoulders, and 18″ from the neckline to the bottom edges (folded). The neck is an opening where the two woven panels meet and measures 9″ in length. The sides are stitched to create arm holes, but can easily have the stitching removed if desired.

This huipil is sweet with hand embroidery that features rows of red cats with white eyes and nose. The embroidery in the body has given it a slightly gathered look across the chest. The neck opening is trimmed in red. The sleeves are trimmed with red diamonds with white accent. The woven striped cotton background is navy blue denim style fabric with stripes of red. This fabric has softened with washing, but has not lost its color. This is a great example of the huipiles of Panajachel that are frequently decorated with cats.

This huipil is in good used condition, with a few sign of wear.
