Very large, classic vintage huipil with beautiful weaving and striking embroidered accents! It is from the Quetzaltenango region of Guatemala (Frequently referred to as Xela). This lovely older huipil measures 36″ across the shoulders, 40″ across the lower edge, and 31″ from the neckline to the bottom edges (folded). The neck opening is round and measures approximately 5 3/4″ in diameter (snug fit over adult head). The sides are stitched to create armholes.

This softer colored huipil is accented around the collar with hand-guided, machine-done embroidery that features a sweet girl and bird in a garden of flowers. The woven background is woven in lighter hued colors. The weaving features geomorphic figures of birds, corn plants, zigzag rivers, and mayan stars. Where the panels join in this three panel huipil, there is a colorful ‘randa’ of hand sewn seams. The background fabric is a woven white cotton. The neck and sleeve openings are trimmed in a black velveteen. The lower edge is an added-on white commercial fabric.

This huipil is in good used vintage condition, with some sign of wear, some loose threads and slight wear at the head opening and on the chest and randa. A wonderfully beautiful textile for wear or display!
