San Antonio Aguas Calientes

Vintage daily use huipil made in the town of San Antonio Aguas Calientes. This area is known for its incredibly detailed weaving that is frequently copied in other nearby towns. This lovely older huipil measures 31″ across the shoulders, and 22″ from the neckline to the bottom edges (folded). The neck opening is diamond shaped, and measures 5 1/2” on each of the four sides.

This vintage huipil has the traditional rows of zigzag rivers, mayan stars, and darling flowers adorning the chest. The flower design at the shoulders and across the center of the chest are done in the very fine and detailed San Antonio weaving style where the pattern can be seen both inside and out, and is identical. The weaving is incredibly fine, causing this huipil to be wonderfully soft to the touch. This is a perfect example of the classic San Antonio Aguas Calientes design. This particular huipil has a zipper located vertically along the center seam on each side. On one side it has been sew closed and is almost invisible. On the other side, it has been left functional (photo) but it also is not easily seen.

The colors are a full spectrum of green, blue, orange, red, yellow and much more. The design is woven on a deep burgundy woven cotton base.

This vintage huipil is in good used condition. There is slight wear as well as some loose threads. Along the delicate weaving at the shoulders there is a few tiny ‘open’ areas between the different patterns. This is not a flaw, but is characteristic of the fine weaving of the area.
