437 San Juan Atitan-0143San Juan Atitán

Whimsical huipil with beautiful weaving and design! It is from San Juan Atitán in the Huehuetenango region of Guatemala. This bright huipil measures 30″ across the shoulders and 18″ from the neckline to the bottom edges (folded). The neck opening is square and measures 4 1/2″ by 5″. The sides have been sewn to create armholes.

This daily use huipil is darling with woven designs that feature whimsical mayan geomorphic animals throughout the shoulders and bodice on both sides. There are turkeys, ducks, cats, quetzales,  and corn plants. There are a few added figures in the lower section on both sides. The neck, shoulder, and chest area is woven with cotton and acrylic threads that have a multitude of colors including red, purple, and pink. The soft background fabric is cotton with red, purple and white stripes. The neckline and shoulders are trimmed with a hand embroidered accent. There is a delicate fringe at the bottom on both sides.

Additional photos can be found here.

This huipil is in very good used condition, with no sign of wear. There are a few loose threads from the weaving process. This is a very nice textile!
