442 San Juan Atitan-0139San Juan Atitán

Elegant huipil with beautiful weaving and design! It is from San Juan Atitán in the Huehuetenango region of Guatemala. This lovely huipil measures 31″ across the shoulders and 18″ from the neckline to the bottom edges (folded). The neck opening is square and measures 3 3/4″ by 5 3/4″. The sides have been sewn to create armholes.

This daily use huipil is striking with woven designs that feature mayan stars and zigzag rivers throughout the shoulders and bodice on both sides. It is accented around the collar with radiating circles. The style of weaving found in this huipil is different than those of the area in that the weaving is raised and more accented. The neck, shoulder, and chest area is woven with cotton and acrylic threads that have a multitude of colors. The very soft background fabric is cotton with purple, deep burgundy and white stripes. The neckline and shoulders are trimmed with a hand embroidered accent.

This huipil is in excellent used condition, with no sign of wear. There are a few loose threads from the weaving process. This is a very nice textile!
