443 San Juan Atitan-0157San Juan Atitán

Lovely purple huipil with beautiful weaving and design. It is from San Juan Atitán in the Huehuetenango region of Guatemala. This huipil measures 31″ across the shoulders and 23″ from the neckline to the bottom edges (folded). The neck opening is square and measures 4″ by 6″. The sides have been sewn to create armholes. Near the lower edge, the sides have been tapered in to make it narrower at the hips. This can easily be adjusted.

This daily use huipil is striking with woven designs that feature radiant suns, mayan stars and zigzag rivers throughout the shoulders and bodice on both sides. The neck, shoulder, and chest area is woven with cotton and acrylic threads that have a multitude of colors including red, purple, turquoise, and blue. The soft background fabric is cotton with red, purple and white stripes. The neckline is trimmed with a hand embroidered accent in various colors.

Additional photos can be found here.

This huipil is in fair used condition, with some sign of wear. There are a few loose threads, a very tiny hole just under the design, and a couple of very tiny stains on the background fabric.
