451 San Juan Atitan grande-0412San Juan Atitán

Very striking and very large older huipil with beautiful weaving and design! It is from San Juan Atitán in the Huehuetenango region of Guatemala. This expansive huipil measures 40″ across the shoulders, and 30″ from the neckline to the bottom edges (folded). The neck opening is square and measures 5″ by 5″. The sides have been sewn to create armholes.

This older huipil is striking with woven designs that feature radiant suns, mayan stars, and rivers throughout the shoulders and bodice on both sides. The neck, shoulder, and chest area is woven with cotton threads that have a multitude of colors including red, pink, green, turquoise, and blue. The background is a soft red and white cotton with tiny accent color stripes. The neckline is decorated with a hand embroidered accent in pink, purple and blue. There is a purple trim on the sleeves. This older huipil shows a quality in design and threads that is not seen as much in the more modern and current textiles. This huipil has a small mayan star woven in the lower edge, it is the nahual of the owner as a protection.

This huipil is in good used condition for its age, with a few sign of wear. There are a few loose threads and quite a few small stains. This is a very glorious textile and would be a lovely piece to wear or display!
