483 San Juan Coatzal-0184San Juan Cotzal

Very detailed vintage huipil from the village of San Juan Cotzal. This striking smaller huipil measures 24″ across the shoulders, and 27″ from the neckline to the bottom edges (folded). The neck opening is roundish/square and measures 5 1/2″ in diameter. The sides have had the stitching removed to open the arm holes, but can easily be restitched if desired.

This huipil features extensive and elaborate weaving of geomorphic figures that are representative for the area. There are many birds, deer, owls, and people woven throughout. The weaving is a rainbow of colors woven on a red and white horizontal striped background. The lower sections under the designs are a simple white cotton. The collar has been trimmed with a deep burgundy fabric and accented with narrow green, red, and blue stitching.

Additional photos can be found here.

This huipil is in good used condition with some signs of wear. There are a couple of small stains in the bodice and a couple in the lower white section, but nothing to detract from the beauty of this vintage textile. Perfect for display or wear!
