787 San Juan Cotzal-2325San Juan Cotzal

Very detailed smaller huipil from the village of San Juan Cotzal. This striking smaller huipil measures 24″ across the shoulders, 20″ across the chest, and 24″ from the neckline to the bottom edges (folded). The neck opening is square and measures 3.5″ x 3.5″ with an additional 3.5″ snap-closed slit to aid in pulling over the head (very tight fit over avg adult head). The sides have had the stitching removed to allow the huipil to open completely, but can easily be restitched to create armholes if desired.

This huipil features extensive and elaborate weaving of geomorphic figures that are representative for the area. There are many birds, deer, owls, and people woven throughout. The weaving is a rainbow of colors woven on a red and white horizontal striped background. The lower section under the designs is a fantastic raw (nubby) white cotton. The collar has been trimmed with a purple fabric and accented with narrow colorful stitching.

Additional photos can be found here.

This huipil is in excellent used condition with little sign of wear. Perhaps a few loose threads. The snap at the collar shows some wear. Perfect textile for display or wear!
