San Mateo Ixtatán

San Mateo Ixtatán (Ceremonial)

Absolutely huge and stunning museum piece from San Mateo Ixtatán! This beautiful and rare ceremonial huipil measures 44″ across the shoulders, and 29″ from the neckline to the bottom edges (folded). The neck opening is round and measures 6″ in diameter.

This huge huipil is breathtaking with its elaborate fully hand-embroidered design in brilliant colors of red, yellow, purple, fuchsia, and blue sewn on a simple muslin background. Two huipiles were made and sewn back to back to create this very large and very heavy reversible huipil. The design has the round ‘suns’ radiating from the collar and are accented with elegant black cats. The lower edge of the huipil is full of fuchsia flowers, butterflies, cats, and quetzals. This huipil weighs approximately 4 pound 12 ounces. True ceremonial huipiles from San Mateo Ixtatán are very difficult to come by. This huipil bears the initials ‘SI’ on the lower section on one side.

This huipil is in excellent used condition, the only flaw being a very small spot on the lower white section on one side.
