Santa Catarina Ixtahuacan 397-0936Santa Catarina Ixtahuacan

Very unique huipil in excellent condition. This rarely seen all black huipil is from the town of Santa Catarina Ixtahuacan. This stunning huipil measures 30” across the shoulders, and 24″ from the neckline to the bottom edges (folded), and the collar is an opening between the panels in both front and back and measures 9 1/2″ in length. The sides have had the stitching removed, so this huipil opens completely. The sides can easily be stitched closed to create arm holes for wearing.

This all black background huipil is colorful with its mayan warrior/soldier figures adorning the bodice. The colors are a rainbow of hues. There is much use of all cotton thread in this huipil. Where the two panels join in the center, there is a simple yet colorful randa stitched on the portion of the bodice that bears the design. The background fabric is a medium weight black woven cotton. Huipiles from this region are almost never seen with an all black background. This is a very special textile!

This huipil is in excellent used condition, with very little sign of wear. Perhaps a few loose threads. A very rare find!
