Santa Maria de Jesús

Vintage embroidered huipil, full of lifelike quetzales! It is from the town of Santa Maria de Jesús. This elegant and striking huipil measures 29″ across the shoulders, and 28″ from the neckline to the bottom edges (folded). The neck opening is round (scalloped) and measures 5 1/2″ in diameter. The sides have had the stitching removed to open the arm holes, but can easily be restitched if desired.

This vintage huipil is beautiful with brilliant colored embroidery that features two quetzales (national bird of Guatemala) on each side of the huipil in a flower garden full of wonderful flowers. The colors are glowing jewel colors of greens, pinks, blues, purples, oranges, yellows and more! The neckline and sleeves are accented with a simple trim of black crochet. The background is a black commercial fabric. The embroidery is machine done free-hand, and is truly an art form. The embroidery is done with heavier weight thread, giving this huipil some weight. This is a wonderful example of the incredibly beautiful ‘fiesta’ huipiles of Santa Maria de Jesús.

This huipil is in good used condition. There are some signs of wear such as loose threads and/or worn areas of thread. The crochet trim accent is missing on one of the sleeves and half is missing on the other sleeve. In the very center on each side (between the quetzales) is a stitched area where the previous owner removed what probably was a zipper opening. The stitching was done on the underside and blends well with the embroidery. This is still a very beautiful textile.
