873 Santa Maria de Jesus-4326Santa Maria de Jesús

Very stunning vintage embroidered huipil, full of lifelike quetzales and peacocks! It is from the town of Santa Maria de Jesús. This stunning huipil measures 29″ across the shoulders, 27.5″ across the chest,  and 27″ from the neckline to the bottom edges (folded). The neck opening is diamond shaped and measures 4.5″ along each of the four sides (smaller). The sides are stitched to create armholes.

This huipil is absolutely beautiful with brilliant colored embroidery that features two quetzales (national bird of Guatemala) on each side in a garden full of flowers and rabbits. The colors are glowing jewel colors of greens, pinks, blues, purples and more! The embroidery is all machine done free-hand, and is truly an art form. Just amazing! The head and sleeve openings are trimmed in raspberry colored velveteen. The background is a black commercial fabric. This is a wonderful example of the incredibly beautiful ‘fiesta’ huipiles of Santa Maria de Jesús.

This huipil is in great used condition, with a few loose threads and slight wear on the embroidery of the bodice and at the neckline.
