879 Santa Maria de Jesus-4302Santa Maria de Jesús

Absolutely spectacular ceremonial style huipil in stunning red and black. This vintage huipil is from the town of Santa Maria de Jesús. This stunning huipil measures 34.5” across the shoulders, 34″ across the chest, and 38″ from the neckline to the bottom edges (folded). The neck opening is diamond shaped and measures 5.5″ along each of the four sides with an additional 2″ slit. The sides have had the stitching removed so that the huipil opens completely. It is fairly easy to restitch the sides  to create armholes.

This rarely seen huipil is in the ceremonial Santa Maria style and is long and beautiful with its detailed geomorphic figures throughout. Double-headed eagles, feathered serpents, and birds can be seen in the design. It is fully woven. The color is mostly red with a rainbow of accent colors in cotton threads. The background fabric is a medium weight woven black cotton. The neck opening appears to have been retrimmed with a royal blue acrylic thread.

This one of a kind huipil is in very good used condition, with very little sign of wear. Perhaps a few loose threads and some slight fading due to age. There are a couple of places where the panels join where the stitching has come loose. A stunning and unique textile!
