Santiago Atitlán

Santiago Atitlán

Beautiful vintage item! Very stunning lavender hand embroidered huipil, full of lifelike birds!! It is from the town of Santiago Atitlán on the shores of Lake Atitlán. This elegant huipil measures 30 1/2″ across the shoulders, and 25 1/2″ from the neckline to the bottom edges (folded). The neck opening is diamond shaped and each of the four sides measures 5 1/2″ in length. The sides have had the stitching removed to open the arm holes, but can easily be restitched if desired.

This huipil is absolutely beautiful with elaborate hand embroidery that features rows of lifelike birds using a variety of colors inspired by the nearby lake waters. The collar is embroidered with rosettes of flowers. The woven striped cotton background is light purple with stripes of dark purple. Just amazing! This is a wonderful example of the incredibly beautiful huipiles of the Santiago Atitlán region.

This vintage huipil is in great used condition, with minimal sign of wear, perhaps a few very faint stains. There is a slight color variation in the purple colored background.
