Santiago Atitlán

Very stunning lavender hand embroidered huipil, full of lifelike birds!! It is from the town of Santiago Atitlán on the shores of Lake Atitlán. This elegant huipil measures 33″ across the shoulders, and 29″ from the neckline to the bottom edges (folded). The neck opening is round and measures 7″ in diameter. The sides have had the stitching removed to open the arm holes, but can easily be restitched if desired.

This huipil is absolutely beautiful with elaborate hand embroidery that features rows of lifelike birds using a variety of colors inspired by the nearby lake waters. The collar is embroidered with rosettes of flowers accented with butterflies on each side that run across the shoulders as well. The woven striped cotton background is light purple with stripes of dark purple. Just amazing! This is a wonderful example of the incredibly beautiful huipiles of the Santiago Atitlán region.

This huipil is in great used condition, with minimal sign of wear, perhaps a few loose threads. There is a slight color variation in the purple colored background.
