Santiago Atitlán

Very large lovely hand embroidered huipil, beautifully accented with flowers and peacocks! It is from the town of Santiago Atitlán on the shores of Lake Atitlán. This elegant huipil measures 27 1/2″ across the shoulders, and 26″ from the neckline to the bottom edges (folded). The neck opening is diamond shaped and measures 4 1/4″ by 4 1/4″ with an additional slit of 1 1/2″ on one side of the neck. The sides have had the stitching removed to open the arm holes, but can easily be restitched if desired.

This huipil is absolutely beautiful with hand embroidery that features flowers and leaves surrounding the collar in shades of purples and olive greens. The woven cotton background is white with navy blue/black vertical stripes and purple/black woven horizontal stripes. In each square created by the woven lines there are embroidered peacocks of a variety of colors filling each square. Just amazing! This is a wonderful example of the incredibly beautiful huipiles of the Santiago Atitlán region.

A small sewn representation of the owner’s nuhual can be seen on the front inside of the huipil near the bottom. Among the Maya, each person has his or her own nahual who watches over and protects him. The nahual can sometimes be found sewn into the lower part of a huipil so that it can always be kept close.

This huipil is in great used condition, with minimal sign of wear. There are various small stains on the white background fabric. They do not detract from the beauty of this textile.
