798 Santiago Atitlan-2506Santiago Atitlán

Very stunning light purple, hand embroidered huipil, full of beautiful birds! It is from the town of Santiago Atitlán on the shores of Lake Atitlán. This elegant huipil measures 31.5″ across the shoulders, 24″ across the chest, and 22″ from the neckline to the bottom edges (folded). The neck opening is a generous 7″ x 7.5″. The sides have been stitched to create armholes. *Note, the sides of this huipil have been tailored, taken in and the excess fabric cut, so they cannot be opened out completely.

This huipil is absolutely beautiful with elaborate embroidery that features rows of larger stunning lifelike birds. The embroidery is all done by hand, and is truly an art form. Sadly, these hand made pieces are giving way to the more modern, machine made ones, so these are becoming harder to find. The woven striped cotton background is purple with stripes of dark purple. The color and detail of the birds are just amazing! This is a wonderful example of the incredibly beautiful huipiles of the Santiago Atitlán region.

This huipil is in very good used condition with minimal sign of wear, perhaps a few loose threads. There are two very small faint stains in the bodice and some slight fading of the purple around the neck and sleeves. Nothing to detract from the beauty of this piece of art!
