829 Santiago Atitlan-2649Santiago Atitlán

Very stunning lake-blue embroidered huipil, full of little birds!! It is from the town of Santiago Atitlán on the shores of Lake Atitlán. This elegant huipil measures 33″ across the shoulders, 29″ across the chest*, and 32″ – 34″  from the neckline to the bottom edges (folded). The front and back are different lengths. The neck opening is circular and measures 5 1/2″ in diameter. *The sides on this huipil have been taken in approximately 2″ and if let out would make this huipil larger. The sides have been stitched to create armholes.

This huipil is absolutely beautiful with elaborate hand weaving that features row upon row of beautiful little birds filling the bodice. The neckline is accented with lovely hand embroidered flowers. The hand embroidery is accented with many tiny glass beads. The thicker woven cotton background is soft purple with deep burgundy stripes.  In the horizontal stripes there is some use of metallic thread. Just amazing! This is a wonderful example of the incredibly beautiful huipiles of the Santiago Atitlán region.

This huipil is in great used condition, with minimal sign of wear, perhaps a few loose threads. There is some slight wear around the neck opening. A spectacular piece of art!
