545 Zunil-0131Zunil

Amazing and detailed embroidery on this textile! This very unique huipil is from Zunil, in the Quetzaltenango region of Guatemala. It measures 33″ across the shoulders and 32″ from the neckline to the bottom edges (folded). The neck opening is round and measures 6 1/2″ in diameter. The sides have been stitched closed a tiny bit just under the arm openings, the remainder of the sides are open.

This incredible huipil is woven with cotton/acrylic blended threads that is common for the Zunil region. It features an entire pueblo going about daily life in wonderful detail. The beautiful scene is done with free-hand machine embroidery that surround the collar and the sleeves. The collar and sleeve openings are trimmed in black velveteen. The background is pale dove grey and very pale purple with yellow and green stripes.

Additional photos can be found here.

This huipil is in very good used condition, with a few signs of wear, perhaps a few loose threads and some pulling of the background fabric. This is a spectacular textile with detail not often seen!
