564 Zunil-0275Zunil

Bright and detailed embroidery on this textile! This striking huipil is from Zunil, in the Quetzaltenango region of Guatemala. It measures 33 1/2″ across the shoulders, 35″ wide across the lower edge,  and 32″ from the neckline to the bottom edges (folded). The neck opening is round and measures approximately 5″ in diameter (very tight to pull over adult head). The sides have had the stitching removed to open the arm holes, but can easily be restitched if desired.

This interesting huipil is woven with cotton/acrylic blended threads that is common for the Zunil region. It features alternating burgundy/red and black stripes. The burgundy/red stripes were done in a thread that allowed the color to run, creating a wonderful washed color effect on the light background. The collar is trimmed in hand-guided machine embroidery in a lovely red color.

Additional photos can be found here.

This huipil is in good used condition, with few signs of wear, perhaps a few loose threads at the collar and a couple on tiny white spots on the black stripe on one side. A lovely huipil with beautiful colors!
