641 Zunil-0601Zunil

Amazing and detailed embroidery on this textile! This very unique huipil is from Zunil, in the Quetzaltenango region of Guatemala. It measures 31″ across the shoulders and 29″ from the neckline to the bottom edges (folded). The neck opening is round and measures 6″ in diameter (generous). The sides have had the stitching removed, so this huipil opens completely. The sides can easily be stitched closed to create arm holes for wearing.

This incredible huipil is woven with cotton/acrylic blended threads that is common for the Zunil region. It features the great Mayan warrior, Tecún Umán, and others surrounded by large mayan glyphs and beautiful roses. All the embroidery is hand-guided machine done and is amazing! The background is pale lilac dove grey and teal grey stripes. There is a delicate fringe on one side.

Additional photos can be found here.

This huipil is in great used condition, with a few signs of wear, perhaps a few loose threads around the neck and sleeve openings. This is a spectacular textile with detail not often seen!
