Santa Maria de Jesús #236
Santa Maria de Jesús (luto)
Very stunning embroidered huipil, full of lifelike quetzales! It is from the town of Santa Maria de Jesús. This elegant and striking huipil measures 28″ across the shoulders, and 28″ from the neckline to the bottom edges (folded). The neck opening is somewhat round (more scallop-shaped) and measures 6″ in diameter. The sides have had the stitching removed to open the arm holes, but can easily be restitched if desired.
This huipil is a huipil de luto (mourning) generally worn after the death of a spouse or loved one; thus the extensive use of purple. It is a beautiful example of luto huipil that is not often seen for sale.
This huipil is absolutely beautiful with brilliant colored embroidery that features two quetzales (national bird of Guatemala) on each side of the huipil in a flower garden full of wonderful flowers, rabbits, doves and peacocks. The colors are glowing jewel colors of greens, pinks, blues, purples and more! The neckline and sleeves are accented with a simple black crochet trim. The background is a black commercial fabric. The embroidery is all machine done free-hand, and is truly an art form. Just amazing! This is a wonderful example of the incredibly beautiful ‘fiesta’ huipiles of Santa Maria de Jesús.
This huipil is in very good used condition, with some loose threads.
