Lovely colorful, reversible faja (belt) made in the town of Santa Maria de Jesús. Fajas are used as the belt to hold up the corte (skirt) in the mayan traje or outfit. This beautiful faja measures 2.75″ wide, 90″ long, with an additional 8″ fringe on each end. The stitched flower designs runs approximately 35” along each end.

This faja is woven with a deep black background with a blue stripe along each edge. Along one end there are eye catching colorful flowers of red, blue, orange, purple and pink with green leaves done with  free-hand machine embroidery. Along the other end there are rounded flowers in burnt orange and yellow, also done with machine embroidery. There is a hint of metallic thread throughout the designs. The flowers stand out against the dark background.

Woven corte, or mayan skirt, in stunning black and white design! The corte is a wrap-around skirt that consists of a cut of cloth usually joined to form a tube into which the woman steps. Excess material is wrapped around the body, folded at the waist in pleats, and tied with a faja (belt).

This corte measures 41″ wide and 92″ long (laid flat). Cortes are generally sewn together to make a tube for wearing. This one has has been cut along the short side so it is one long piece of fabric. This corte is very simple with its white stripes on a black background. This corte is made from cotton/acrylic blend threads has the feel of the acrylic threads. There is a decorative randa both horizontally and vertically done is a vibrant rainbow of colors.

Fabric from cortes can be used in a variety of ways besides just for wearing, such as table covers, bed covers, curtains, throw pillows, clothing, etc. due to the heavier and more durable nature of the weaving.

This corte is in very good used condition, with a little sign of wear, perhaps a few loose threads. There are a couple of tiny areas where it appears wax was spilled, easy to remove.  A lovely textile!

Very unique men’s tzute head covering/wrap from the Chichicastenango region. Traditional tapestry style with beautiful designs and incredible colors. Fantastic texture too! This is a very beautiful men’s lienzo tzute/head wrap from the Chichicastenango region of Guatemala, famous for having one of the largest markets in the country. This lovely handwoven piece measures 10.5″ wide by 51″ in length. The design in the center is 20″ in length.

This single panel tzute is striking with elaborate weaving that features a lovely multicolored classic flower design in the center on a black and white checked background design.

Stunning tzute from the town of Santa Maria de Jesús. This is a lovely detailed tzute that measures 40″ wide and 45″ long.

This tzute is beautiful with its bright colors and hand weaving that feature the traditional animal motifs of Santa Maria de Jesús. The colors are  blue, green, purple and pink with yellow accents throughout. The thread used to weave this tzute are acrylic and cotton blends. Where the two lienzos join, it has a simple stitching that runs the full length of the tzute, creating the illusion of one large square cloth. The open edge has a simple hem. The background fabric is woven red cotton with blue, green, and purple stripes.

Beautifully elegant tzute or utility cloth/shawl made in the town of Chajul. Tzutes are generally used by both men and woman in a variety of manners. They are used for many tasks including carrying items, covering the shoulders when cold, and folding a placing on the head to keep the sun off or when entering church.  This tzute measures 27″ by 57″ with an additional 3.5″ of fringe at each end.

This tzute is woven in the classic burgundy rich, multi-colored striped threads with fantastic geomorphic animals incorporated throughout and delicate soft tassels on each end. The tzute is made on a single woven panel. It is thick, heavy, soft and rich to the touch! This would make a spectacular shawl!

Early vintage threads and design! This lovely huipil is from Zunil, in the Quetzaltenango region of Guatemala. This unique huipil measures 31″ across the shoulders, 31″ across the chest,  and 23″ from the neckline to the bottom edges (folded). The neck opening is round and measures approximately 5.25″ in diameter. The sides have been stitched to create armholes.

This huipil is woven with cotton blend threads that is common for the Zunil region. It has large red and brown leaf-style designs done in hand embroidery in all cotton threads that surround the collar. The collar and sleeve openings are trimmed in acrylic thread crochet. Lovely and unique pattern!

This lovely huipil measures 26″ across the shoulders, 26″ across the chest, and 26″ from the neckline to the bottom edges (folded). The neck opening is round and measures 5.25″ in diameter with an additional 2″ snap-closed slit to aid in pulling over the head (snug fit over adult head). The sides have been stitched to create armholes.

This huipil features extensive and elaborate weaving of geomorphic figures including various birds, deer, and people that are representative for the area of Nebaj. The colors are a variety of greens, burgundy, and blues. The background is white acrylic blend.

Fuchsia! Elegant woven huipil from the area of San Lucan Toliman. This beautiful classic huipil measures 32″ across the shoulders, 28″ across the chest, and 25″ from the neckline to the bottom edges (folded). The neck opening is diamond shaped and measures approximately 5.75″ along each of the four sides. The sides are stitched, creating armholes.

 This huipil is very beautiful with a hand woven pattern throughout. The tiny geomorphic figures are woven into the background fabric. The design is alternating rows of of animals, mayan stars, and corn plants. It has a variety of colors in the tiny figures.  The collar and sleeve openings have sweet little accents of hand embroidered flowers. The woven background is soft, super bright pink woven cotton. This is a wonderful example of the classic style huipiles of the San Lucas Toliman region in a very unique color.

We generally do not purchase any new textiles but due to the extreme difficulty in finding huipiles from this area we went directly to a weaving cooperative in San Juan la Laguna to find this special huipil. This is one of two that we brought back from the trip.

Striking huipil from San Juan la Laguna. The collar is accented with the classic design circling the neck opening that is representative in huipiles from the area. This two lienzo huipil measures 31″ across the shoulders, 30″ across the chest, and 25″ from the neckline to the bottom edges (folded). The neck opening is more or less square and measures approximately 5.25″ x 6.25. The sides have been stitched to create armholes.

The accent around the collar is a rainbow of colors hand embroidered in soft acrylic thread that extends to the little squares below the neckline circle. The background fabric is a crisp woven cotton blend in red with wonderful white stripes.

This stunning huipil measures 34.5” across the shoulders, 34″ across the chest, and 38″ from the neckline to the bottom edges (folded). The neck opening is diamond shaped and measures 5.5″ along each of the four sides with an additional 2″ slit. The sides have had the stitching removed so that the huipil opens completely. It is fairly easy to restitch the sides  to create armholes.

This rarely seen huipil is in the ceremonial Santa Maria style and is long and beautiful with its detailed geomorphic figures throughout. Double-headed eagles, feathered serpents, and birds can be seen in the design. It is fully woven. The color is mostly red with a rainbow of accent colors in cotton threads. The background fabric is a medium weight woven black cotton. The neck opening appears to have been retrimmed with a royal blue acrylic thread.

The colors are a sea of rich raspberry purples and pinks with lovely black and white ikat stripes. The collar is trimmed with machine embroidery of flowers in purple and pink. The same embroidery cascades from the shoulders where the panels join. The collar is trimmed with black vevet-like accent. The background fabric is a nubby, raw white cotton.

Vintage Huipil from the department of Sololá. This huipil measures 32.5″ across the shoulders, 27.5″ across the chest*, and 24″ from the shoulders to the bottom edge. The neck opening is round and measures approximately 6.5″ in diameter. The sides have been stitched to create armholes. *The sides of this huipil have been taken in approximately 2″ on each side. If this stitching was removed, it would make the huipil larger.

This huipil is woven in the traditional style of Sololá with a rainbow of colors.  There are traditional ikat style woven stripes throughout the bodice with accents in the upper portion. They are hand-guided, machine done embroidered figures. There is a predominantly black and brown cotton blend background with a variety of colors throughout the bodice.

Very stunning vintage embroidered huipil, full of lifelike quetzales and peacocks! It is from the town of Santa Maria de Jesús. This stunning huipil measures 29″ across the shoulders, 27.5″ across the chest,  and 27″ from the neckline to the bottom edges (folded). The neck opening is diamond shaped and measures 4.5″ along each of the four sides (smaller). The sides are stitched to create armholes.

This huipil is absolutely beautiful with brilliant colored embroidery that features two quetzales (national bird of Guatemala) on each side in a garden full of flowers and rabbits. The colors are glowing jewel colors of greens, pinks, blues, purples and more! The embroidery is all machine done free-hand, and is truly an art form. Just amazing! The head and sleeve openings are trimmed in raspberry colored velveteen. The background is a black commercial fabric. This is a wonderful example of the incredibly beautiful ‘fiesta’ huipiles of Santa Maria de Jesús.
