Description

Woven corte, or mayan skirt, in rich red colors with lovely ikat design! The corte is a wrap-around skirt that consists of a cut of cloth usually joined to form a tube into which the woman steps. Excess material is wrapped around the body, folded at the waist in pleats, and tied with a faja (belt).

This like new and heavier corte measures 38″ wide and 78″ long (laid flat). Cortes are generally sewn together to make a tube for wearing. This corte has the opening at the long sides as shown in the picture of the corte hanging. If the stitching joining the sides of the tube were removed, this fabric would measure approximately 38″ by 156″ laid out flat, more than 4 yards of fabric! Note that the corte has been extended by adding an extra strip along the end. Some taller women prefer a longer skirt than the looms provide. This is common.

This corte is beautiful with its rich raspberry colors and ikat design that is accented with rows of flowers made by the ikat pattern. This medium weight corte is woven on a foot loom of soft cotton. There is some use of metallic silver thread throughout.

Fabric from cortes can be used in a variety of ways besides just for wearing, such as table covers, bed covers, curtains, throw pillows, clothing, etc. due to the heavier and more durable nature of the weaving.

This corte is in like new used condition, with little to no sign of wear, perhaps a few loose threads. A lovely textile!
