Woven corte, or mayan skirt, in lovely pink and green stripes with lovely ikat design! The corte is a wrap-around skirt that consists of a cut of cloth usually joined to form a tube into which the woman steps. Excess material is wrapped around the body, folded at the waist in pleats, and tied with a faja (belt).
This corte measures 41″ wide and 90″ long (open, laid flat). Cortes are generally sewn together at the ends to make a tube for wearing. This corte has had the stitching removed from the join, so it opens up completely. This corte is beautiful with its soft pastel colors and detailed ikat design. Note that the corte has been extended by adding an extra strip along the end. Some taller women prefer a longer skirt than the looms provide. This is common.
Fabric from cortes can be used in a variety of ways besides just for wearing, such as table covers, bed covers, curtains, throw pillows, clothing, etc. due to the heavier and more durable nature of the weaving.
This corte is in good used condition, with a little sign of wear, perhaps a few loose threads and a few slightly worn areas. A lovely textile!
