Very striking huipil, full of striking cranes and birds! It is from the town of Nahuala. This mostly cotton huipil is beautiful with its detailed woven design predominantly in red. The pattern is cranes across the chest and back with accents in blue, pink, orange, and green. There is bleeding of the color onto the light background cotton fabric, which is a desirable trait in the huipiles of this region. The technique is to intentionally let the color of the threads run onto the base fabric. It is said that this dates back to the use of expensive silk threads on the huipiles, which would lose some of the color and run, causing this stunning effect.
This huipil is in good used condition, with some sign of wear, perhaps a few loose threads and some staining in the lower section in addition to the intentional running of the colors. There is a 2″ stain in the center on one side in the lower section. A beautiful and unique vintage work of art!
