Description

Wonderfully detailed huipil from the Nahualá region of Guatemala. This striking huipil measures 28″ across the shoulders, 28″ across the chest, and 23″- 28″ from the neckline to the bottom edges (folded). The panels are not the same lengths. The head opening is diamond shaped and measures 4 3/4″ along each of the four sides (slightly snug fit over average adult head). The sides have been stitched, creating arm holes for wearing.

This mostly all cotton older huipil is striking with its detailed woven design in purple with accents in various colors. The pattern has geomorphic designs of a large two-headed eagle across the chest and back. There is very slight dye run of the purple color onto the light background cotton fabric, which is a desirable trait in the huipiles of this region. The technique is to intentionally let the color of the threads run onto the base fabric. It is said that this dates back to the use of expensive silk threads on the huipiles, which would lose some of the color and run, causing this stunning effect.

This beautiful huipil is in fair used vintage condition with perhaps a few loose threads. There are some faint stains, a couple of holes in the lower section, and some wear around the neck opening. A true vintage textile. This is a fantastic textile perfect for wear or for display!
