Description

Wonderfully detailed huipil from the Nahualá region of Guatemala, full of warriors! This striking huipil measures 29″ across the shoulders, 29″ across the chest, and 26″ from the neckline to the bottom edges (folded). The head opening is an opening in the center seam and measures approximately 10 1/2″ in length. The sides have had the stitching removed so that the huipil opens completely. It can easily be restitched, creating arm holes for wearing.

This mostly cotton older huipil is striking with its detailed woven design in purple with accents in blue, pink, orange, and green. The pattern is geomorphic designs of warriors across the chest and back and across the shoulders. There is bleeding of the purple color onto the light background cotton fabric, which is a desirable trait in the huipiles of this region. The technique is to intentionally let the color of the threads run onto the base fabric. It is said that this dates back to the use of expensive silk threads on the huipiles, which would lose some of the color and run, causing this stunning effect.

This beautiful huipil is in good used vintage condition with perhaps a few loose threads. There is some faint staining. There is open weaving along the lower edge, that is normal for this style. This is a fantastic textile perfect for wear or for display!
